Australian Shepherds that we have are either Miniature or Standard. The only significant difference between the an Australian Shepherd and a Miniature Australian Shepherd is the size.
Intelligent, hard working, and versatile, the Aussie is a no-nonsense dog who thrives in a home where his brains and energy are put to good use. Aussies require regular exercise and mental stimulation. Daily long walks and regular training sessions are needed. Without the proper stimulation, an Aussie can become bored, mischievous and loud.
Australian shepherds are happiest in houses with a large yard with ample room to run around and get their energy out. Aussie Minis can fair well in an apartment given that they receive enough outdoor exercise such as going to the park and playing frisbee. Aussies are excellent with active children and will make it their personal obligation to protect and watch over them as they would a flock of sheep. However, it is important to teach the breed that herding humans is not acceptable.
Their coat is a thick double coat that is medium to long in length. Although it is think and long it requires little more than the occational brushing to prevent any matting. Aussie coats have white markings in any of the following colors; blue or red merle, red, black, or tri (black, tan & white).
The Australian Shepherds on the page are of standard size unless noted otherwise.
Australian Shepherds have an average life span of 12 to 15 years. They stand 13-18 inches (miniature) or 18-23 inches tall (standard) and are 15-35lbs (miniature) and 40-65lbs (standard) as an adult.
